Apprentices are looking for a teacher. I am going to spend a lot of time teaching a less experienced ceramist the chemistry, physics, aesthetic issues involved in making clay art. In exchange for this opportunity I expect my apprentices to help me with the more mundane aspects of studio practice. This usually takes the form of managing social media, publicity, blogging, wood preparation and cleaning. This does not involve the traditional Asian methodologies, but perhaps the modern version of making a studio function. My apprentices do not wedge, center, or mix my clay, but they are expected to spend 20 hours a week maintaining the studio and working on the computer.
This is an excellent position for people looking to increase their knowledge of wood firing techniques, glaze chemistry and clay chemistry. There are frequent critiques of form, function and making techniques. This job requires an advanced proficiency in ceramic arts.
